No less than five wines from Boplaas Family Vineyards have been rated among the best of the best, with scores of 90/100 and above, by globally influential connoisseur Tim Atkin. Among them was the Boplaas CWG Colheita Cape Tawny 2007, which the Wine Master heralded Fortified Wine of the Year for the third time in a row.
Every year, Atkin tours the country to compile one of the most comprehensive tastings of South African wines for his authoritative special report. In the latest edition, he scored the Boplaas CWG Colheita Cape Tawny 2007 at 97 points – the highest scoring in its category.
Atkin also awarded the 2001 Cape Vintage Reserve Port from Boplaas 94 points, showing the longevity of Cape Ports made by the Calitzdorp winery.
Its red wines that received 90 points or higher, were the Gamka Reserve Blend 2021 (93), the Ring of Rocks 2020 (90) and the Touriga Nacional Family Reserve (90).
CWG Colheita Cape Tawny 2007: A giant of a port
The Boplaas CWG Colheita Cape Tawny 2007 is a single harvest tawny that was released by Carel Nel, for his 35th and final auction as member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG). It spent 16 years in barrel and only 300 bottles were produced.
For its making, the finest Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional grapes were selected from low yielding vineyards. The fruit was hand harvested at optimal ripeness, fermented and fortified in small lagars, barrel matured in large, seasoned oak barrels, and blended to achieve a distinctive colour and flavour.
Cape Vintage Reserve: Authentically Boplaas
The 2001 vintage was one that truly showcased the Nel Family’s know-how of crafting fine Cape fortified wines. Utilising Portuguese varieties and traditional vinification, the Cape Vintage Reserve was crafted with a dedication to style.
It was produced from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão. Inky in colour with hints of purple-black on the rim, the wine shows a bouquet of crushed blackberries, tart cranberries, kirsch and violets.
Gamka Red 2021: A wine that leads the way
Through its recognition from Tim Atkin, the Gamka Red 2021 continued the course set by the trailblazing vintages. These showcase the very best of the Cape’s rare Portuguese varieties in a wine with class, elegance and longevity.
It is but one of from the award-winning portfolio available from the Boplaas farm in Calitzdorp, tasting rooms along the Garden Route and selected stores countrywide. These wines are also available online at www.boplaas.co.za.
