Boplaas Port joins UK master of wine’s influential list of SA favourites

Sep 18, 2018

Wines from Boplaas Family Vineyards have again received top ratings by acclaimed UK Master of Wine Tim Atkin, including four achieving more than 90/100 in his latest South African Special Report. The highest scorer for the champion Port and still wine producer was the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2006, one of only 159 wines to receive 95 points or more.

The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2016 received 94 points; the Boplaas Gamka Branca 2017, a white blend that includes Portuguese variety Verdelho, 91; and, the Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2014, 90.

Atkin’s 2018 South Africa Special Report is in its 7th edition and is highly regarded for the span of wines reviewed. Atkin is also an influential commentator in a market that is one of the biggest for South African producers. For 2017, 1 687 wines were reviewed of which 164 wines made his 95+ list of favourites.

Boplaas Port is no stranger to the report with its Cape Vintage Reserve 2015 rating 94 last year.
The winery only releases the benchmark Cape Vintage Reserve ports during exceptional vintages. Re-affirming its stature, Boplaas re-released its 2006 this year along with the latest edition – the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2016.

The wines are crafted from Portuguese varieties Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Souzao and Touriga Franca, using only the finest fruit of the vintage, vinified according to traditional techniques and intended for decades of enjoyment.

The 2016 recently won Double Platinum at the SA Top 100 and the title of Grand Cru National Champion Port for the best Cape Port in South Africa at the 2016 SA Young Wine Show. Soon after its original release, the 2006 vintage won the SA Champion Port Trophy at the SA Young Wine Show. It also received a Veritas Double Gold and five star-ratings from Wine magazine and Platter’s South African wine guide.

The Boplaas Family Reserve Gamka Branca 2017 is a barrel-fermented and matured white blend – Branca meaning “white” in Portuguese. This second vintage of the wine incorporates the Portuguese variety Verdelho, a recent addition to Boplaas plantings.

The Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2014 hails from a variety regarded by many in Portugal as that country’s premier grape cultivar and is a mainstay of many fine Ports too. A passion at Boplaas, the hardy, yet shy-bearing vine allows for the crafting of exceptional, aromatically expressive and age-worthy wines. This wine was one of the Top 10 red table wines that triumphed at the recent CAPPA Challenge 2018.

Boplaas’s award-winning wines are available from the cellar door in Calitzdorp; its tasting room in Klipheuwel in Klein Brak on the Garden Route; and, from discerning fine wine retailers nationally.

Calitzdorp Cellar door is open:
Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:00
Saturday 09:00 – 16:00
Sundays 10:00 – 15:00.
