BOLAAS SHINES AMONG MOST SUCCESSFUL AT MICHELANGELO
Boplaas Family Vineyards emerged as one of the top winners when the results of the 2022 Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards were announced last weekend. The celebrated family-owned drinks producer in Calitzdorp received no less than nine top-tier accolades.
Boplaas wines received eight medals while Boplaas Single Grain Whisky 8 YO Virgin Cask was awarded Platinum – one of just 19 such awards made. To receive a platinum medal, entrants must score at least 96 out of a possible 100 points.
“These latest results are again a wonderful acknowledgement of consistent quality Boplaas maintains and has maintained for generations,” says distiller Daniel Nel, the sixth generation at the farm. “Where spirits are concerned, our essence is the arid climate that intensifies maturation, and the pure water we use, which flows from the Swartberg Mountains to our home in its foothills.”
Further affirming that quality resides in the very DNA of Boplaas, the Michelangelo panel awarded Double Gold medals to the Boplaas Touriga Nacional 2021, Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2019 and Boplaas Cape Tawny NV too.
It is significant that Daniel’s sister, winemaker Margaux Nel is a Touriga Nacional specialist having focused on the variety for her MSc degree at Stellenbosch University.
Gold medals were also awarded to the
- Boplaas Cabernet Sauvignon 2020;
- Boplaas Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2020;
- Boplaas Gamka Red 2020;
- Boplaas Gamka Branca 2019; and,
- Boplaas Single Harvest Colheita Cape Tawny 2005.
These wines and spirits are available from the Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp; its online shop; tasting rooms on Klipheuwel Farm in Little Brak and Old Nick Village in Plettenberg Bay; and, discerning fine wine retailers nationwide.
