The Nel’s of Boplaas have prided themselves on crafting the finest fortified wines possible from Portuguese varietals, applying traditional techniques and bottling wines to offer enjoyment decades from harvest.
The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve is the pinnacle of their pursuit of fortified perfection – crafted from only the finest hand-harvested fruit from low-yielding old vines, bottled in limited quantities and destined for decades of careful bottle maturation and enjoyment. The 2009 vintage was an almost perfect vintage and the wines will offer enjoyment in future decades reminding one of this exceptional season.
“Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2009 is an embodiment of our pursuit of fortified perfection, a testament to our vinous heritage, a glimpse of what the Cape has to offer and a wine to take on the world’s best!”- Carel Nel (cellar master, Boplaas).
Tasting Notes:
A quartet of old vine Portuguese varietals – Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Souzão & Touriga Francesca – combine in this inky black wine bursting forth with a bouquet of crushed black berry, bramble, tart cranberry, kirsch, purple plums with bright All-spice top notes intermingled by fynbos, apricot, savoury undercurrents, liquorice and wine spirit. The bouquet slowly unfurls onto the bold juvenile palate with more liquorice, peach, intense black hedgerow fruits, cocoa nib and hints of scrub onto the lengthy dry finish. Time will temper the fiery fruity exuberance of youth, slowly unfurling the complexities of this fine Cape fortified in the decades ahead.
Serving Suggestions:
Enjoy this fine fortified accompanied by hearty rustic cuisine – springbok pie, roast leg of lamb, braised beef short rib, roast duck with plum sauce or a Moroccan lamb tagine; charcuterie and fine mature cheese, decadent dark chocolate desserts or simply decant and enjoy this wine on its own allowing it to reveal its true complexity and myriad of flavour nuances in the glass. Best decanted prior to serving and if carefully cellared this wine will offer enjoyment over the next three decades or more.
